    Installation of interior doors

A room’s interior is shaped by the combination of many elements, and interior doors are among the most important components of the overall design. The market offers a wide variety of interior doors, differing in both design and the materials they are made from.

Choosing interior doors for a private house, apartment, or office depends on several factors. To ensure you select the right door and receive high-quality installation, we recommend contacting the specialists through the Varpet app, who can handle installation projects of any complexity.

    Types of Interior Doors

Interior doors can be classified into several categories based on specific criteria.

    • The material the door is made from
    • The presence or absence of a lock
    • The opening mechanism
    • The opening range (swing angle)

Types of Interior Doors by Opening Mechanism

When choosing an interior door, the first thing to consider is its opening mechanism. In other words, how the door opens. There are four main categories of door mechanisms:

Hinged doors. The most common option is a door that opens inward or outward. Some models also allow opening in both directions. The main disadvantage of this type is that it requires additional space for the door to swing open. At the same time, hinged doors provide the highest level of thermal and sound insulation.

Sliding doors. These doors open and close using special rollers. They are compact and ideal for small spaces.

Folding doors. This is an innovative and stylish solution for modern interiors. Folding doors are available in two main types: book-style and accordion-style. Both use the same opening mechanism; the only difference is the number and size of the folding panels.

Pivot doors. This is a relatively new type of interior door. Thanks to its mechanism, it can open in both directions, helping to save space.

    Types of Interior Doors
“Types of Interior Doors by Construction”

Interior doors are also classified according to their construction.

Single-leaf doors. This is the most common and practical option for apartments. They are typically available in standard widths of 70–80 cm.

Double-leaf doors. This design features two opening panels. These doors are generally wider and therefore require a larger doorway. One-and-a-half-leaf doors. In this design, one panel is a full-size functional door, while the second panel is narrower and is opened only when additional space is needed.

Types of Interior Doors by Material

When selecting an interior door, the first factor to consider is the material. Today, doors are manufactured from various materials, the most common of which are:

    • Wood. The most natural option, known for its elegant appearance and wide variety of colors. Wooden doors are strong and durable but are significantly more expensive. More affordable models use wood only for the frame. Pine doors are also a relatively budget-friendly option.
    • MDF. A high-quality and affordable alternative to solid wood doors. The inner core of an MDF door may be made from particleboard or similar materials. More durable and premium models are made entirely from thick MDF panels.
    • Plastic. A practical choice for offices, balconies, and rooms with high humidity. Although plastic doors have a simpler appearance, they are widely used due to their affordability and moisture resistance.
    • Metal. Metal is generally combined with other materials, such as glass, when used in interior doors.
    • Glass. Glass is most commonly combined with wooden or metal frames, although fully glass interior doors are also available. Durable safety glass is used, featuring a protective film that prevents it from shattering into small fragments if broken.

If you choose MDF interior doors, you can easily change the color and appearance of the outer surface by applying PVC film, laminate, or other natural or synthetic finishes to match your interior.

Types of Interior Doors by Purpose

    Interior Door Dimensions
“The material of an interior door directly affects its quality. When choosing a door, pay attention to sound insulation, moisture resistance, and durability. It is also important to consider the room where the door will be installed.”

For bathrooms, choose doors made from materials that can withstand temperature fluctuations and high humidity. If your interior design requires wooden doors, pay close attention to the quality of the wood and its finish. The outer layer should not have cracks, as moisture can quickly deform the door. In addition, bathrooms with wooden doors must have proper ventilation. Kitchen doors should also meet these requirements. Metal and wooden doors with glass inserts are also commonly used for kitchens.

The living room offers complete freedom of choice. Here, you can focus more on the design than on the material. For bedrooms, it is recommended to choose doors made from environmentally friendly materials, such as wood or MDF.

    Interior Door Dimensions and Installation

When constructing or renovating a space, it is important to consider the dimensions of doors, windows, and furniture.

Interior doors are manufactured in standard sizes.

    Stages of Interior Door Installation

Depending on the door material and construction type, different challenges may arise during installation. To ensure high-quality workmanship and reliable interior doors, we recommend seeking assistance from the experienced professionals available through the Varpet app.

STAGE 1. REMOVING THE OLD DOOR FRAME AND DOOR This stage is required when replacing an existing door. The removal process is carried out according to the following steps:

    • Remove the door from its hinges
    • Cut the middle section of the frame with a saw
    • Remove the cut sections from the wall
    • Clean the wall of insulation materials and debris
    • Level any uneven surfaces

Interior door installation is generally carried out after the interior finishing work of the room has been completed.

STAGE 2. INSTALLING THE DOOR FRAME

    Locksmith (Door Installation)
“The door frame is a structure made of bars and may have a U-shaped or rectangular form. Rectangular frames are most commonly used for bathrooms and restrooms.”

Before installing the frame, reinforcing wooden blocks are embedded into the wall at several points. Holes with a diameter of 4 mm are drilled into the frame to secure it to these blocks. The holes must align with the embedded wooden supports. The frame is then fastened to the wall using screws. The empty spaces are filled with low-expansion polyurethane foam to prevent deformation after the foam cures. Before applying the foam, the stability of the entire structure is checked and any weak points are reinforced. Once the foam has hardened, the excess is removed, and the installation proceeds to the next stage.

    STAGE 3. INSTALLING THE HINGES

The hinges are responsible for allowing the door to open and close, so they must be durable and of high quality. The hinges should be narrower than the thickness of the door.

Hinge installation is carried out in several stages.

STAGE 4. INSTALLING THE DOOR CASING

Door casings (trim) serve a decorative purpose. They are attached to the frame and give the entire door structure a finished appearance. Installing door casings is not particularly difficult, but for the best results, it is recommended to entrust the work to Varpet's trusted professionals.

Types of Door Casings and Installation Tools

Various types of door casings are available, differing in both material and shape. The most common are wooden and plastic casings. Steel, aluminum, plywood, and laminated casings are also available.

Door casings come in a variety of shapes, including flat, rounded, and decorative profiles. Flat casings are the simplest and most common option and complement almost any interior. Rounded casings are less common and are well suited for interiors with unique designer solutions. Decorative casings are considered the most aesthetically appealing and are often paired with wooden doors.

Installing Interior Door Locks and Handles

From a functional standpoint, interior doors may be equipped with handles and locks whose design should complement both the door and the overall interior.

Handles are essential for hinged doors. They make interior doors much more convenient and safer to use, so handle installation should be carried out after the entire door assembly has been installed. Although installing a handle is not particularly difficult, it does require certain skills. If you do not have the proper tools or experience, it is advisable to seek professional assistance to save both time and your purchased product.

There are no strict rules regarding the installation height of a door handle. They are usually installed about one meter above the floor. The height can be adjusted slightly higher or lower based on personal preference or the height of the occupants. In practice, 1 meter is considered the optimal height. When installing handles, it is important to ensure that all door handles in the home are mounted at the same height.

There are several types of interior door handles, each with its own design features and installation requirements.
